Every month, our apps receive millions of ad impressions. These ads help fund our ability to provide real-time bus and train times worldwide to customers on our free plan.
But here’s the difference: we’ve never allowed ‘personalised advertising.’ That means we don’t share sensitive data, like your location, with ad agencies. We believe your privacy isn’t for sale.
The Data Breach: What Happened and Why It Matters
Over the past few days, there have been news reports on a massive data breach from a ‘location broker’ — when apps share users’ location with ad networks, shady companies can insert themselves into the middle and siphon off locations in real-time, storing them and selling them on to the highest bidder.
The breach exposed over 12,000 apps, including major transit apps. Unfortunately, transit apps often collect and store significant amounts of location data, making them prime targets.
Not a week goes by without an email from a ‘location broker’ offering $$$ to insert their code into our app to extract user data. We’ve never taken the bait — and never will. These requests go straight to our junk folder.
Our principle is, while we show advertising in the app, we’ve built it around the idea that great service shouldn’t come at the cost of your privacy.

What we do share is a meaningless user ID like 3b99bf27-e58a-4483–899c-cd27fa8edc42 — and that’s unique to that provider, not shared between them.
We could make a lot more money from ads by sharing your location — but that doesn’t sit right with us. We’d rather provide a great experience when you’re on your journey.
